"Dating back to the 15th century, the Manchester Cathedral has experienced quite a bit of history! After Henry VIII broke away from the Roman Catholic Church, the Cathedral's riches were confiscated. During the English Civil war in the mid 17th century, pitched battles were fought inside and around the Cathedral between the Royalists (those supporting Charles I, the Stewarts, and the Anglican Church) and the Roundheads (Oliver Cromwell loyalists). Also Ann Lee, the founder of the religious movement called the Shakers interrupted services here when she lived in Manchester. The church was targeted by the Nazi Luftwaffe and received a direct head during the bombings of 1940. Yet through all this the Church maintains it's quiet dignity and beauty. It is a must see while in Manchester!"

Well actually, it was Bess and her second husband William Cavendish who bought Chatsworth Manor for £600 back in 1549 and began building the first house on the site. In fact, The Hunting Tower which stands on the hill above Chatsworth till this day and is available to hire out as a holiday let, was built by Bess back in the 1580s."

Where to eat and drink in Ancoats - our guide to the best restaurants and bars
"The name 'Erst' is an archaic word meaning 'formerly' or 'long ago', which has guided this restaurant's choice of wine and beer, and use of fire for cooking. Despite its trendy location, and a menu that's restrained to the point of looking spartan, Erst is not another shrine to minimalism but a warm, casual place with breathing space for an open bar and a host of small tables. Dishes from the grill include naturally leavened flat breads made in house and served with whipped lardo (cured pork fat); and grilled whole mackerel with tomato and monk's beard (a green plant that looks like chives but tastes more like spinach) with wild garlic aioli."
